The TRIO/Student Support Services program at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville will host the inaugural First Generation Celebration Sept. 19-20 in the student commons in Independence Hall. Activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

Randa Garlin grew up watching her stepmother, who she has always called her “bonus mom,” teach students. That early exposure to teaching inspired Garlin to want to be a part of helping others learn.

Renee and Kourtney Johnson will both have a live-in study partner to support them in their academic goals next year. The mother-daughter team will be enrolled in nursing courses at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville.

Josh Bryant considered nursing as a career after high school but it wasn’t until his daughter was born with a rare disorder that he began to pursue his nursing degree. Bryant graduated from the registered nursing program at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville in December 2016.

Neither Zack Groves nor Jay Tee Young intended to become a welder, but when they discovered the welding program at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, it turned out to be a perfect fit for both of the Southside High School graduates.
